LABC Building Excellence Awards
Congratulations to Bilton Build & Design Ltd | Bilton Architectural Services Ltd and Hereward Homes Ltd for winning their categories at the LABC East Midlands Awards 2026!
Long Acre Farm, Main Street, Ashby Parva - Best Residential Extension
Long Acre Farm demonstrates how a sensitive extension can transform a historic home whilst preserving the character that makes it special.
Designed by Bilton Architectural Services Ltd and constructed by Bilton Build & Design Ltd, the project replaced a dated conservatory at a Grade II listed Victorian farmhouse with a carefully designed single-storey side and rear extension. A large roof lantern and extensive glazing bring natural light into an open-plan kitchen, dining and family space, connecting the home with its courtyard and gardens.
Working with the historic building presented several challenges. An existing well was unexpectedly discovered beneath the proposed extension, requiring careful consideration of the foundations and structural design. Through close collaboration between the project team and Leicestershire Building Control Partnership, the well was safely retained and incorporated as a distinctive illuminated fish pond, preserving a piece of the property’s history.
The team also developed a shallow insulated roof construction to complement the proportions of the listed farmhouse, supported by detailed thermal and glazing assessments to balance energy performance with the architectural design.
Close working with LABC helped the team address complex fire safety and means of escape arrangements arising from previous alterations. Regular discussions and site inspections enabled practical solutions to be agreed whilst respecting the historic fabric.
The completed project combines thoughtful design, skilled construction and heritage conservation to create a bright and welcoming family home.
